Mile 2.6 by Ed Lazaroo

The Statue of Liberty soon to be declared obsolete.

Trump’s New New Colossus (Keep Hope Out)

BY Ed Lazaroo

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,

Or the Orange skinned Troglodyte

With conquering limbs astride from land to land;

A billionaire, in his own mind—no tax records to reveal his crimes

Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand

If in a dress beware his hand

A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame

Can be grabbed by one with fame

Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name

He gives to his lawyer to make the hush payment

Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand

A wall will extend across the land

Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command

The babies into cages—tear gas to inflame

The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

You are not welcome shouts the “man”

“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she

Die at home with dignity

With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,

They’re sending people that have lots of problems and they’re bringing those problems with us.

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime.

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

Walls work. They keep criminals out. They save good people from attempting a very dangerous journey from other countries, thousands of miles, because they think they have a glimmer of hope of coming through.

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

With a wall, they don’t have that hope.

Walls work.
