Mile 1.3 by Doerte Weber
The time and scale involved in weaving a large scale art piece lends itself to reflecting on the United States cultures and history. Weaving, at the most elemental level, consists of warp and weft, each running in a separate direction but intertwined. It is such an old art and craft, having been used for centuries. I have chosen a very prominent weaving pattern: “The Blooming Leaf of Mexico.” It gives us the comfort of familiarity. Just like the United States flourished in the intercultural mixture of its people and countries, this pattern survived through different cultures and centuries. The art piece is diverse enough to speak to everybody.
