Mile 9.1 by Ada Trillo
Seeking Asylum on December 31, 2017, William Gonzalez from Cuba tells me a part of his story in the shelter of Cd. Juarez Mexico. He is currently seeking asylum in the United States because he is being persecuted by the government in Cuba. This is his third attempt to escape. During this last attempt, the boat he was travelling on with two friends broke, resulting in the death of both of his companions.
This project was made possible by Leeway Foundation’s Art and Change Grant where I will tell the stories of people living in safe houses across major Mexican border towns. I will document the cruelties and injustices of the failed immigration policy under the current administration and highlight the enormous contributions that immigrants from South and Central America have made to the country.
