Mile 9.7 by Ada Trillo
Monica, age 18, and her one year old daughter are originally from Guatemala. They traveled to the US in an effort to reunite with her husband. However, once they made it to the border, they were apprehended by border patrol. .
Their time in the El Paso detention center was filled with mistreatment and unsanitary conditions. Shortly after their stay, the were returned to Mexico. That is when I met Monica, in the Migrant Shelter of Juarez. The young mother shared with me that she lost all hope.
They have been waiting several days for the International Organization for Migration’s buses. Once they get the opportunity to board, they will return to Guatemala.
